Dot’s Tots Holiday Festival 2020– Recap

Dot’s Tots Holiday Festival 2020– Recap

On January 5th 2020, Dot’s Tots Foundation hosted its annual holiday party at Scene 75, a new entertainment venue at Tuttle Crossing. Dot’s Tots Chairman of the Board, Andy Warnock, called the event a “tremendous success.”

“Aside from the $17,900 we gave away in scholarships and thousands more in gifts and financial support, we were able to host 91 children and families who would have otherwise been unable to enjoy a night out,” Warnock shared. “Scene 75 was a great host; our ‘work’ was confirmed by the 300+ smiles on faces.”

Dot's Tots Holiday Recap 2020

Additional validation came in dozens of notes received after the event:

“Hello!

We were so blessed to be able to be part of the event last night. We have a 17 year old foster daughter and it was so much fun to see all our kids have a blast last night. She is a victim of human trafficking and has a lot of trauma and our family and bio kids (ages 8, 7, and 4) have been affected in so many ways. We love her so much and are planning on adopting her.

It brought so much joy to see all my kids have carefree fun and doing something that we would otherwise not be able to afford.

Thank you thank you thank you!”

Dot's Tots Holiday Recap 2020

Along with supporting the foster care community and children battling debilitating disease and/or illness, Dot’s mission includes assisting teenagers in their pursuit of higher education.  Dots Tots Foundation honored eight young adults with college scholarships during the winter event.  The honorees were selected by a committee scoring community involvement, academics, need, and a written essay.

Excerpt from Winning Essay (writing about her foster siblings and their hometown of Hilliard, Ohio):

“If I could change one thing about Hilliard, I’d make sure that no teenager has to go into adulthood without a family. I would make sure that everyone here has someone to come home for the holidays to, someone who brings them a cupcake and sings ‘Happy Birthday’ every year, someone who will always answer the phone when they are sick, or hurt, or sad. I want that to be what people think of when they hear that I’m from Hilliard. I want it to be that place where people belong and where we take care of each other… I would want to remind people that living in the Hilliard community is a huge privilege, but that we should also be mindful that there is room for us to continue building a kind, accepting, welcoming place where families come to thrive AND people without families can find a home.”

A huge thanks to the supporters and sponsors who allow Dot’s Tots Foundation to make a real impact in Central Ohio:

Until next year…

The Evans Family Attic Renovation

The Evans Family Attic Renovation

“We got our first call for a 1-year old little boy, who is now our Noah, in 2016. And since then we have added a total of 5 new children (all from foster care) to our already 3 biological children,” said Jesse Evans (Dad).

The Evans Family is special. So, too, is their home; it has history, charm, and not quite enough space for the growing brood. The history of the home belongs to Jesse’s grandfather. “He flipped houses for a living, and I would work for him during the summers as a kid. Our house was the last one that we worked on before he passed away from cancer.”

So, selling the long-time family property and upsizing was not an option. Enter Dot’s Tots Foundation! With the help of AM Interior Wood Designs (www.amiwd.com) and in partnership with Movement Church (www.movementcolumbus.com), Dot’s Tots Foundation was able to provide $19,000+ in materials and in-kind labor donations to renovate the old attic to sleeping space for the young children. Now the Evans have plenty of space to keep up with their beautiful family.

“Kids in foster care have had a rough past,” Jesse notes. “We hope to give them a bright future and thanks to Dots Tots, that just got a whole lot easier.”

It is hearts like Jesse and Charity that inspire us to do what we do. We are thankful for you, Evans Family.

To date, Dot’s Tots Foundation has provided $275,985 to Central Ohio youth in need.

On February 27, 2014, Skylor was diagnosed with brain cancer and from that moment on, his motto in life was “Fear Motivates”. Fear motivates positivity – he lived each day making sure his life was better than it was yesterday. Fear motivates love – he continued to make sure people knew he loved them and that he was always there for them. He often said, “Love your life. Things could be a lot worse”. Fear motivates strength – despite his battle with cancer, he always pushed himself to be greater.

Skylor wasn’t only an amazing son and a wonderful big brother, he was a talented artist who had a passion for graffiti art. But, his passion didn’t stop there. He was a proud member of the Marching Band, an active member of the AFJROTC, volunteering his time to recruit members and helping the community. He also volunteered as an Assistant Coach for Jr. Drill Team and volunteered with Habitat For Humanity during spring break his junior and senior years. He had a calling and he lived his life fulfilling it.

On October 30, 2016, Skylor lost his fight with cancer. During his battle, Skylor bravely and so gracefully provided hope, courage, strength, and love to so many. In honor of this wonderful young man who left us too soon, this race lives on. Proceeds will be used to fund an annual scholarship to area high school seniors pursuing a college degree. A gifted graffiti artist and creative author, Skylor had hoped to attend college. We’re going to see to it that those dreams are passed on to many, many teenagers who follow in Skylor’s footsteps.
