The Evans Family Attic Renovation

The Evans Family Attic Renovation

“We got our first call for a 1-year old little boy, who is now our Noah, in 2016. And since then we have added a total of 5 new children (all from foster care) to our already 3 biological children,” said Jesse Evans (Dad).

The Evans Family is special. So, too, is their home; it has history, charm, and not quite enough space for the growing brood. The history of the home belongs to Jesse’s grandfather. “He flipped houses for a living, and I would work for him during the summers as a kid. Our house was the last one that we worked on before he passed away from cancer.”

So, selling the long-time family property and upsizing was not an option. Enter Dot’s Tots Foundation! With the help of AM Interior Wood Designs (www.amiwd.com) and in partnership with Movement Church (www.movementcolumbus.com), Dot’s Tots Foundation was able to provide $19,000+ in materials and in-kind labor donations to renovate the old attic to sleeping space for the young children. Now the Evans have plenty of space to keep up with their beautiful family.

“Kids in foster care have had a rough past,” Jesse notes. “We hope to give them a bright future and thanks to Dots Tots, that just got a whole lot easier.”

It is hearts like Jesse and Charity that inspire us to do what we do. We are thankful for you, Evans Family.

To date, Dot’s Tots Foundation has provided $275,985 to Central Ohio youth in need.

On February 27, 2014, Skylor was diagnosed with brain cancer and from that moment on, his motto in life was “Fear Motivates”. Fear motivates positivity – he lived each day making sure his life was better than it was yesterday. Fear motivates love – he continued to make sure people knew he loved them and that he was always there for them. He often said, “Love your life. Things could be a lot worse”. Fear motivates strength – despite his battle with cancer, he always pushed himself to be greater.

Skylor wasn’t only an amazing son and a wonderful big brother, he was a talented artist who had a passion for graffiti art. But, his passion didn’t stop there. He was a proud member of the Marching Band, an active member of the AFJROTC, volunteering his time to recruit members and helping the community. He also volunteered as an Assistant Coach for Jr. Drill Team and volunteered with Habitat For Humanity during spring break his junior and senior years. He had a calling and he lived his life fulfilling it.

On October 30, 2016, Skylor lost his fight with cancer. During his battle, Skylor bravely and so gracefully provided hope, courage, strength, and love to so many. In honor of this wonderful young man who left us too soon, this race lives on. Proceeds will be used to fund an annual scholarship to area high school seniors pursuing a college degree. A gifted graffiti artist and creative author, Skylor had hoped to attend college. We’re going to see to it that those dreams are passed on to many, many teenagers who follow in Skylor’s footsteps.

Jackson’s Story

Jackson’s Story

May 25, 2012, will be forever etched into their minds. “We noticed subtle things about Jackson’s physical development—enlarged calves, didn’t walk until almost two years old, waddled when he ran—but individually, these things didn’t cause us much concern,” said Kelly, Mom to Jack. “We just chalked them up to late physical development.” It was something much more serious. The diagnosis: Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Jackson stopped walking at the age of 10, and uses a power wheelchair full time. He continues to lose arm strength and is constantly in a state of adjustment and acceptance. But, Jack is not a diagnosis. Jack is a son, a best friend, a brother, a cousin. All the things that make Jack unique—his crazy sense of humor, his overly-sensitive aversion to whispering, his ability to always know just when you need a hug—those things remain untouched by Duchenne.

Jack’s fandom for the Cleveland Cavaliers also remains untouched. On April 5, 2018, Dot’s Tots Foundation in partnership with The Ride and Flyer’s Pizza fed, transported, and treated Jack and his family to a courtside experience to the Cavs / Wizards game at Quicken Loans Arena. “Jackson is a HUGE Cleveland Cavaliers fan. He never misses a game on TV, and his bedroom is like a Cavs shrine. So imagine when our friend, Bobby Wright, surprised him and our whole family with a trip to watch the Cavs play in person, which Jack is always asking to do,” Kelly shares. “Jackson sat courtside during warmups with his big brother, and John Wall actually came over to him, fist bumped him, and offered to take a picture with Jackson! The Cavs played one heck of a game, and pulled out a win. I don’t think Jackson has screamed so much in his life.”

Thanks to the support of all Dot’s Tots Foundation donors and sponsors, Jackson enjoyed a night he will not soon forget!
